Hugh Masekela and Kenny Barron set for Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival

The programme for the fourth Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival to be held August 1-4 was announced at Ystad Theatre today by the festival’s Artistic Director, Jan Lundgren.

It was also announced that the festival’s Jazz Ambassador for 2013 is author Henning Mankell, a lifelong jazz lover who has strong links with Ystad through his Wallander detective novels and films.

This year’s programme of 31 concerts showcases young Swedish jazz talent, established Swedish jazz stars and leading names in the world of jazz.

The line-up, described by Jan Lundgren as “more multicultural than ever” includes legendary South African trumpeter, Hugh Masekela, Kenny Barron Platinum Trio (USA), Tom Harrell Quintet (USA) and the Afro-Cuban jazz of Omar Sosa Quarteto AfroCubano.

Other international names include Elina Duni Quartet (Albania/Switzerland), Clarence Penn Quartet (USA), Caecilie Norby (Denmark) and Fabrizio Bosso Quartet (Italy) who will present a multimedia concert/film screening, interpreting the score from cult Italian film “The Easy Life”.

Playing in Sweden for the first time are Champian Fulton Trio from the USA, and Russian alto sax player, Dmitry Baevsky, with his quartet.

A “secret Italian guest” will play with Jan Lundgren Trio, one of two concerts featuring the festival’s Artistic Director, who will also perform with the Harry Allen Quartet featuring Jacob Fischer.

New for this year’s festival is experiment jazz with two concerts at Ystad Art Museum presenting TESLA and NEO Nästesjö Extreme Orchestra.

Rising stars in Swedish jazz playing at the festival include Elin Larsson Group, Makross, Gustav Holmqvist Eminent Four and the Felix Tani Trio featuring Tomas Franck.

Established names from the Swedish jazz scene include Tolvan Big Band, who play the festival’s opening concert on August 1, Hacke Björsten Quintet and Lars Danielsson.

Jazz for children was a success at last year’s festival and this year, Georg Wadenius Gejoma will play a children’s concert a day before the main festival on 31 July.

This year’s Jazz Artist was also announced. Ardy Strüwer, the multifaceted artist and musician, has provided the painting for the 2013 jazz festival poster.
