Jazz loving Anne Lundberg appointed ambassador of Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival. Anne is a familiar face in town and is often seen at concerts, theater and cultural events and neglect never a good time to talk in glowing terms of the festival.
As conferencier Anne will lead the big final concert “A Quincy Jones Celebration” August 5 at 22:00 of the Swedish jazz elite led by Bengt-Arne Wallin, the festival’s first ever ambassador, and Quincy Jones as guest of honor.

With three months to go until the start of this year’s jazz festival, tickets are already selling extremely well for the 29 concerts.
“Yes, there is a great demand for tickets,” says Thomas Lantz, President of the Festival and Yazz, which is joint festival arranger with Musik i Syd. “We have already sold 1,000 tickets since they went on sale two weeks ago. Last year it took seven weeks to reach that figure and two years ago it took 12 weeks.” Läs mer/Read more »

This year’s Alice Babs Jazz Award winner is… harmonica player, Filip Jers!
The Alice Babs Jazz Award was established in 2004 by Concerts Sweden and SAMI, the Swedish Artists’ and Musicians’ Interest Organization, to support and encourage young jazz musicians. The prize is 50000 SEK. This annual award is given to young musicians and artists who want to pursue music studies or travel in Sweden, or abroad, in order to develop their own musical originality within the jazz genre. The prize money can also be used to support scientific research in the jazz field.
Filip Jers, born in 1986, is an internationally respected harmonica player. European music critics have called him the ”Swedish Harmonica Sensation”. He plays all types of harmonica, from the sophisticated chromatic harmonica to earthy blues harp and the very rare and mysterious bass harmonica. He also plays jaw harp, guitar and accordion. Filip loves to improvise and compose music, and moves easily between jazz, blues, folk music, world music, country, pop, rock, classical and film music.
An overjoyed Filip said on Facebook: “I have received this year’s Alice Babs Jazz Award!!!!! FANTASTIC!!!!! I am proud and touched by this!!! It feels like a real honour to receive it!!! I was also able to make a guest appearance with Nils Landgren, Magnus Lindgren, Bohuslän Big Band and the Värmland Opera Orchestra at a packed Stockholm Concert Hall!”
See Filip Jers at Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival, 3 August, 15:30.
Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival is very proud to welcome Quincy Jones as its guest of honour.
In a career stretching 60 years, Quincy Jones has performed, composed, arranged, conducted and produced music for film and TV, and founded several recording companies and music magazines. He is a musical innovator who has succeeded in mixing pop, soul, hip-hop, jazz, classical music, and African and Brazilian music in exciting fusions that cross musical boundaries.
“This is so tremendous that it’s difficult to really take in. Quincy Jones is the greatest and most versatile artist in the world – in all categories. And he has discovered our festival! This is really massive,” says an enthusiastic Jan Lundgren, the festival’s Artistic Director. Läs mer/Read more »

After Wallander, a jazz triumph for Ystad
The second Ystad jazz festival in southern Sweden drew to a close this weekend, doubling sales but holding firm to its director’s vision of a festival where jazz doesn’t “fall to the background”
At a time when venerable major jazz festivals around the world – driven, they claim, by economics – are incorporating increasing numbers of artists that stretch jazz’s generously elastic stylistic hospitality to breaking point, the second Ystad jazz festival in southern Sweden proved this long weekend (4-7 August) that you can be economically viable and grow rapidly without making concessions to commerciality. Among other things, we have been listening to a number of young future promises including Oscar Johansson Trio with Mira Palme and Sven-Erik Lundqvist’s Trio. Today’s talk show with George and Sarah Riedel was interesting and frank. Too bad so few have noticed it. Svante Thuresson and Blowin Big Band drew an audience of nearly 500 in Leisure Park. In the new issue of Jazz Times pours guitarist Russell Malone adjectives of Pat Martino.
“- Jesus Christ ,man! Pat Martino…I mean, that sound! I got to play with Pat a few times, and I can’t tell you how scary it was to be on the bandstand with him. It’s like going to the zoo and seeing a lion in cage. You have one perception of the lion when you’re on the other side of the bars. But imagine being in the cage with the lion: It looks a little bigger, you can hear it breathing and it can rip you open at any second. That’s the way I felt standing next to Pat onstage.”
